The Wanna Be Filmmaker

Paranormal Activity III (spoilers)

So, I literally just finished watching this movie. I know that the first two are only good for a one time viewing seeing as these movies rely on mostly jump scares. The first one was good in the sense that it was fairly original and I had no clue what to suspect. The second one I will admit made me jump (or made me have those “OMG” moments) many times while I was in the theater. The second one was similar but added new elements to the story and increased the jump scares and shock value, still making the second film enjoyable to watch.

Pretty much these movies are not master pieces but I usually have a blast watching them, at least the first time around. However…

This third film was very disappointing. I felt like not much happened and when something did happen it was totally predictable. It may be that I’m used to the formula the Paranormal Activity movies have given us now, but I feel that there was no originality to this film. Many of the gags have been done in the previous two movies, like the dragging of a person, closing of doors (my god are there a lot of “spooking door closing by itself” gags in this movie), the long awkward standing, etc.

It also seemed like they gave up on the whole idea of watching the tapes in the middle of the film, I guess we’re supposed to assume that…David…Davie…fuck you know the main dude from this movie (who’s exactly like the boyfriend in the first movie) is still watching these tapes but he doesn’t mention it or show them to his wife…uh…shit forgot her name too, except for near the very end of the film. It isn’t until the wife experiences the same kitchen jump scare from the previous film that she’s like…”Oh yeah, fuck let’s leave.” Then at the end it turns out Grandma’s hosting a cult or something and allows Toby the demon to kill her daughter and her husband. And at the end Grandma and the kids seem to be totally ok with the fact that their Mom and step-dad have been violently murdered by a demon. Christy, the youngest kid, even invites the demon back upstairs for a spot of tea or something…ok she didn’t say that but she did ask Toby to come upstairs. I don’t know, this movie actually kinda pissed me off.

Maybe some of the appeal to the other movies is that when they make the realization that there is something demonic in their house they still can’t stop it or do anything about it. I feel that adding that element makes the movie much scarier and gives the film tension, which I felt like this film was lacking. I guess in this film it feels like they didn’t even attempt to figure out or stop this demon. Yes, they run off to creepy cultic Grandma’s house but that’s during the last 10 minutes of the movie.

Overall this movie sucked. If you get scared easily maybe you’ll enjoy this film but otherwise it’s pretty much a waste of your time.

P.S. This is a very disorganized rant I’ve realized and it’s not meant to be a real review.
